Electro-Optical Systems Engineer

| Overview |
Ocean Optics, the
industry leader in miniature optical-sensing and photonics, is seeking a
highly motivated Electro-Optical Systems Engineer or Scientist to join
our growing Research and Development team. The Research and Development
team is responsible for developing the next generation of products and
techniques to ensure the companies growth and sustainable competitive
advantage.
The successful candidate
will lead and conduct basic and applied research experiments and develop
new measurement systems and techniques. The candidate will help
develop our next generation of light sources and electro-optical sensing
and spectroscopy systems via creative and innovative use of emerging and
state of the art photonics technologies.
Specific activities include: developing product concepts; designing,
building, and testing new product prototypes; transitioning prototype
designs to high volume manufacturing; working with customers to define
product specifications and working with the company’s manufacturing and
engineering team to ensure customers’ needs are met.
A Bachelor’s degree
Physics or Manufacturing, Electrical, or Optics/Optical Engineering,
with more than 8 years of relevant working experience is required. An
MBA or advanced degree in Optical Sciences or Optical Engineering is
preferred. Candidates with other academic qualifications but having a
good track record in the requirements below will also be considered for
this or other opportunities. |
| Requirements: |
-
Solid foundation in geometric, physical, and electro optics.
-
Good understanding of Optical and Systems Design Principles (theory &
practical) is required as well as thin film coating and optical
fabrication methods.

Familiarity with various optical and electro-optical sources, components
and detectors.
-
Ability to lead integration activities of optical, mechanical, and
electrical components into new products.
-
Considerable and demonstrated experience using commercially available
optical design and modeling tools (such as Zemax, ASAP, LightTools, Code
V, R-Soft, etc.).
-
Considerable background in performing optical and opto-mechanical
tolerancing work
-
Strong understanding of design for manufacturability and reliability.

Understanding of electrical and mechanical fabrication principles
-
Fluency with computing/data acquisition software such as Excel and
Labview
-
Experience in writing technical reports and work instructions (including
creating engineering drawings).
-
Excellent English written and verbal communication skills and ability to
work effectively with cross-functional teams.
-
Current eligibility to work in the US.

Experience in Spectroscopy instrumentation and analytical instruments is
highly desirable
Other tasks can include
leading efforts in fabrication, assembly, test and integration of new
systems, preparing statements of work, interfacing with vendors,
estimating costs and tracking progress.
Up to 20% travel may be
required
