SeaChanger Color Engines Perform Brilliantly in Theatrical Debut
Ocean Optics CYM Color Changers Make Radiant Introduction
at the Nation’s Largest Community Theatre
Dunedin, Fla., and Omaha, Neb., August 2005 – The
all-new Ocean Optics SeaChanger Color Engines made a radiant theatrical
debut in July 2005 at the Omaha Community Playhouse, the nation’s largest
community theatre. Their performance in Jim Othuse’s design of The
Marvelous Wonderettes was brilliant; now, they’re ready to shine in
Othuse’s next design, the theatre’s Mainstage Series opener, Swing!,
August 26 – September 25, 2005.
The innovative SeaChanger Color Engine is a dynamic CYM
lighting technology that creates millions of brilliant, rich, reproducible
colors using patented dichroic filtering. The self-contained color
changers install easily into ETC Source Four™ Ellipsoidals and provide
smooth, quiet color transitions across a wide color spectrum and white to
full saturation in just one second.
“The simple and smooth color transitions are
impressive,” said John Gibilisco, Playhouse resident designer and
production electrician. “I’m very impressed with the SeaChanger’s extreme
magenta feature – I’m using it to produce saturated reds that I could
never sustain using conventional color filters.”
SeaChangers use remarkably robust dichroic filters that
will not fade, degrade or shift color with time or temperature. The color
engine can be controlled using a 6-channel DMX for variable timed fades
and color mixing. Its high-tech optics offer 85% transmission efficiency
for bright, cool operation without noisy fans.
To lighting designers, it may be what audiences don’t
hear from the SeaChanger that is equally impressive as its colorful
display. “The SeaChanger color engines are dead quiet,” said Gibilisco.
“This is a huge bonus in our intimate black-box theatre. Snapping
traditional color scrollers from frame 1 to 30 is not an option in this
space; also, 30 cooling fans can really increase the ambient noise ruining
quiet moments in a show.”
Careful design consideration was given to electricians,
riggers and board ops in the SeaChanger’s design. The SeaChanger features
an onboard, auto switching power supply that eliminates the need for
additional external power supplies. DMX signal compatibility is built
directly into the SeaChanger. All that is required to operate the unit is
a 115/230 VAC source and a 6-channel DMX console. Additionally, the
SeaChanger is RDM (Remote Device Management) compliant to BSR 1.20, draft
standard 2.1. RDM allows the SeaChanger base DMX address to be remotely
set and the operating mode or fixture settings to be changed.
Ocean Optics presented the SeaChangers in a
well-received lighting seminar at the Playhouse on June 29, 2005. The
workshop gave nearly 50 regional LDs and techs a hands-on opportunity to
mix colors using the SeaChangers in a live theatre setting. Attendees were
able to take apart the units and see for themselves the incredibly high
quality optics and materials used in the SeaChangers; lighting suppliers
were able to see the benefits of integrating SeaChanger into their
offering. “This is a robust platform that a theatre or theatrical supplier
can adopt for the long-run,” said Tom Morris, SeaChanger project manager.
“We spared no expense in making the SeaChanger the best color engine
available.”
